And then Christ says, ‘I and my Father are one.’ Those chief priests, scribes and Pharisees, whoever they were, that were hemming round him; they could stand it no longer. They would not have stoned him there and then, but they would have symbolically picked up masonry that would have been nearby – reconstruction was always going on in parts of the temple – so that he would be apprehended and dragged outside the temple precinct.But Jesus interrupts them. And this is an example to us. He is calm. He knows they will not succeed. And so he is going to take time to plead with them once more. There must have been some among them, I think, who were going to believe, although we are not told as much in this instance. There usually were some because he takes time to reason with them, not just to warn them but to plead them.
