I do not care for the word, ‘escaped’. It is accurate. But I rather like a different word. He eluded them. He just walked through the midst of them with great dignity. Escape suggests a scrummage and a desperate man. The Lord was calm. He had gone among them. He had left them. His time was not yet come for execution to suffer and die for sinners. A more dignified word – he eluded them.
Application
The lesson we learn from this is that the Lord carried on appealing and reasoning with them even though he knew they would reject him. And that is what we must all do. Never forget that we resisted the Lord for many years ourselves. Now we are called to wrestle with people who are resisting him – the masses outside. We soldier on, we plead with them, we reason with them to come to Christ.
