This verse has the Jewish leaders primarily in mind. The chief priests, if they were there, the scribes and the Pharisees understood not the things which Christ said in this allegory, this parable. It is so simple, and they were brilliant people. They were on another wavelength. The scribes particularly searched the Scriptures constantly; they were not fools. Why could they not follow him? Probably what most mystified them was this talk of a new order. This was totally strange to them. The fact that the old order, the Temple order could be ended, that the priesthood could be ended, that people who truly walked with God would be led out from it and removed from it. They just could not take it in. This introduces greater clarification from Christ, and it began to dawn on them what he was saying, that among Israel not everybody was saved; only a certain number really believed with all their hearts and repented before God and found him, and they would be led out of Israel. What a terrible thing in their eyes for him to be saying!
