Thomas still does not even get this intimation. ‘Then said Thomas, which is called Didymus’ – which means twin, though we know nothing at all about Thomas’s twin – ‘Let us also go, that we may die with him.’ He loved the Lord, he believed to some extent in his great mission, yet he did not understand even though Christ had already told him several times that ultimately he was going to suffer and to die, and then he would be raised from the dead. He did not follow any of these intimations that Christ was going to raise Lazarus from the dead. So there is a braveness about Thomas and a devotion, but he is very pessimistic. Let us stand with the Lord, says Thomas, and go with him, and we will perish with.
