Christ reminds her of his affirmation. ‘Said I not unto thee, that, if thou wouldest believe, thou shouldest see the glory of God?’ Some people say that he is referring to what he said to her in verse 26 and verse 27. And that is right, he is. But in verses 26 and 27, he does not say anything about the glory of God, which seems to prove that he is actually referring to the message which started life in verse 4. ‘This sickness is not unto death, but for the glory of God, that the Son of God might be glorified.’ So in verse 40, Christ is reminding her of the original message. This is going to be all about believing. Believing that he is the resurrection, and the life, is so crucial, pivotal, and important – and that is what we learn from this verse. Christ insists that she gets over her doubt, and that she believes.
Application
And he insists so of us too. I come back to all our trials and tribulations, and so on. Are we going to get relief from the Lord? Will he answer our prayers, will he intervene in our circumstances, will he help us? If we believe in the resurrection, and the life – that Christ is those things – then he will deal with us, in his great wisdom.
