Some see these last verses of John 11 as no more than a linking passage, but this tail-piece, or linking passage, is actually very profound. As you look at them, it becomes evident that you are looking at an analysis of the thinking of the chief priests and the scribes and the Pharisees – how they viewed things; how they formulated a decision; what precise form of words they used to pass their resolution and determination to bring Christ under arrest, to try, and to kill him; what they forecast, what they predicted what would happen as a result.
Hard hearts are like that. People say to you today, if God were there, and if Christ were true, and if the Bible were true, would he not have left some powerful, irrefutable evidence? Then we would all be convinced, then we would listen to you Christians and you preachers. No, they would not be convinced, they would not listen. When Christ healed Lazarus, they touched him, and they said it is undeniable. But they still rejected him, because he preached repentance, and change of life, and seeking mercy from God, and salvation and conversion. And they hated his message.
