Verse five builds up the picture – ‘Jesus loved Martha, and her sister, and Lazarus.’ They were pious and earnest people. The sisters had given hospitality before. And yet verse six presents a slight mystery – ‘When he had heard therefore that he was sick, he [speaking of the Lord] abode two days still in the same place where he was.’ He did not go.What did the disciples think? Perhaps they thought, well the Lord is not going to see Lazarus in his sickness. Perhaps he is not that sick. We do not want him to go, we do not want him anywhere near Judaea and Jerusalem. There have been all the attempts to stone him, which we have been through in previous chapters. They want to execute him, and what will become of us? It will be highly dangerous for us all.
