And what did he mean? It was probably a figure of speech from those days, but it is obvious what the Lord meant, that while he is walking by day, according to the divine plan, according to the plan, the Father and himself and the Holy Spirit. While he is walking in accordance with that plan, no harm can befall him. And they had seen that. They had seen all the attempts to stone him, and yet he is has walked through the crowd of assailants, and their eyes have somehow been kept from seeing him, or he has just asserted some of his power and they have been totally unable to act or to do what they wanted to do. I do not know quite how it happened, but they have seen at least four times in the previous chapters, they have been unable to take him.So they know there is a great cloak of protection around the Lord, until the day when he will voluntarily submit himself to arrest, in order to go to Calvary to be our sin-bearer. And yet it does not seem to have affected them. They do not seem to be saying: he is safe, and he uses these words to assure them. ‘But if a man walk in the night…’
