If the seed is not buried in the ground, put to death if you like, done away with, then it dies forever. But if it is buried, ‘if it die, it bringeth forth much fruit.’ What a picture of his purpose, the purpose of his coming. I must die in order to save, to atone, to rise again. Why is that an answer to the Greek seekers after him? Tell them ‘the hour is come’ - and what is the significance of that, to them? It is this: you are Gentiles, the hour is come when Christ is going to do such a thing that all the Gentiles may come in. He is going to be glorified, not only in this city, but throughout the world. The age of the Gospel is dawning when he will be gathering in the people from every land and nation, every day and age.‘Understand this, whether you are Jewish, or whether you are a Gentile,’ Christ seems to say, ‘don’t be disillusioned, don’t be crushed. I am going to die, I am going to fall, I am going to be buried in the ground, and this will be what secures the glory which is to come – the centuries of salvation, and the coming of Christ.’
