John 12:33
Comments
John tells us that being lifted up refers to the manner of his death, being hoisted up on a cross and nailed there, in full, public view, to suffer and to die. Some extend the sense of being lifted up from the earth: lifted up on Calvary, lifted up in the resurrection, lifted up in the ascension, and I have great sympathy with that view. He was lifted up, first of all, on Calvary, and then lifted up higher and higher, as it were, immediately afterwards – and it very likely covers all those liftings.
