This scornful question is not asked by a chief priest, by a scribe, by a Pharisee, but by the multitude. There must have been some particularly strident voice raised, and they all repeat the question and they shout for an answer.
We do that before we are saved. There may be those who ask questions, but the questions are just barricades. They know that the whole issue is: you must come to Christ, and you must repent, and seek him, and find him, and he will save you, and change you, and then you will be his, but you are resisting, and so, you ask awkward questions. You don’t really mean the questions, and you often don’t wait for an answer either – because all the awkward questions can be easily answered – but they are just barricades, and that is so with the Jews here. They are asking what they think are awkward questions for the sake of it.
