John 12:41
Comments
This is one of several New Testament passages which identify Jehovah with the Lord Jesus Christ. Isaiah, says John, saw the glory of Christ and spoke of him. There is no mistaking the fact that John is referring to Christ, for in verse 37 John is describing the unreasonable unbelief of so many of the Jews; their failure (verse 36) to believe in Jesus Christ, who (verse 37) had done so many miracles among them, the one who is the light that he had commanded them to believe in (verse 36), and in verse 38 he shows that this is exactly what Isaiah had foretold would happen. And yet, when we look back at Isaiah 6:1, we read, ‘In the year that king Uzziah died I saw also the Lord sitting upon a throne, high and lifted up, and his train filled the temple’, and this is the one whose glory Isaiah sees. The one who Isaiah refers to as Adonai in verse 1, he several times calls Jehovah in the remainder of the chapter – Holy, holy, holy, is the LORD of hosts’ (verse 3).
