He is going to speak for a moment about the noble office of the apostles and indeed of all Christians subsequently. Eternal life is going to be imparted, of course by God, by the Spirit, but through the instrumentality of apostles. Not that they would give it, but they would preach it, they would announce it, they would persuade people to turn to Christ. They would be privileged to be instrumental in the process. ‘You are those’, Christ says to them, ‘who are my representatives. Whoever listens to you and receives your word, this is your significance, will be finding me and him that sent me. People will be introduced to their God, reconciled with their God, and come to know him and walk with him and be blessed by him, through you and your words.’They did not understand this. This is what they had been prepared for in seminary, if you like, for three years, and yet they still thought he was a political Messiah. And they are now being introduced to something which Christ will enlarge on subsequently. No, you are my messengers. I am the Son of God and through your words representing me, people will have reconciliation with God. It is so put that it is clear, many will reject them. But many others will receive them and accept them.
Application
So the second unseen thing which he begins to reveal to them in this address is their noble office. It is unimaginably glorious. What higher thing could you or I ever be called to do than to introduce people to heaven and eternal life? Whatever your task, your job, your profession, your work, as parents, as employees, as employers, whatever you do in the whole of life there is nothing greater than the office we hold as representatives of Christ. This is the noble office. I represent my Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ.
