Nobody except John knew the reason why Christ spoke these words. Some people say, how could the disciples have thought that Judas was going out to buy things for the remaining days of the feast if it was night? Well, we just learn from the passage that they did. Evidently when the city was swollen with pilgrims and visitors as at the Passover, and its population became five or six times greater than usual; evidently at such times people were trading at night, trading for all they were worth to get what they could. And that is why the disciples might have thought that Judas had been sent to get something.
