He did it solemnly and slowly. It is a symbol, a demonstration. So you get these pedantic comments by the apostle John, as though it is not obvious. He wants us to take it through step by step, slow us down. ‘After that he poureth water into a bason’ – the description is all very deliberate – ‘and began to wash the disciples’ feet, and to wipe them with the towel wherewith he was girded.’ It is a symbol of cleansing.
