This does not mean, believe in me for the sake of our mission. It means believe in me on the basis of the evidence.
If my faith is weak and I am in trouble, I remember the work of Christ, I remember my salvation, I remember that unmistakeable change of heart and life that the Lord gave me. I remember great answers to prayer; and if it isn’t about me I notice other people and I see how they have wonderfully changed and the magnificent things that God has done in them and for them; I see his works of power. I use these things to strengthen my faith, but of course most of all they should bring me just to trust him. Christ is the focal point of my faith, to trust his word and to trust him. But if I am having difficulty with my faith, then at least for the very works’ sake. ‘Look at what I have done; look at my activities – and these things will help you also.’ It’s the counsel of Christ to his disciples about the strengthening of their faith.
