He is going to the Father. ‘Because I live [in glory], ye shall live also.’ The fact that Christ lives means that Calvary has been successful. He has borne away the entire punishment due to his people. The Father has accepted his perfect offering of righteousness. Of course he has. And so because Christ ever lives, back with the Father where he was eternally in glory, his work is totally successful and because of that, we will live also. We will have eternal life, now and after death forever. You will know, he says, by the assurance and the blessing and the power of the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit is the revealer of Christ to his people. He is our enlightener, convicts us of our sin, shows us the truth and Calvary, and then when we are saved, he is our assurer, and he is also the one who causes Christ to live in us, and reveals him to us.Now look carefully at these words – ‘Yet a little while, and the world seeth me no more; but ye see me.’ But we do not! Yes, we do – with the eye of faith. He has gone, but we see him. We are enabled to by the Holy Spirit. We see him when we read the Scriptures. We see him in our mind’s eye. We see him in the evidence of his love towards us. ‘I have gone, but ye see me. The world does not see me, but ye see me.’ ‘Because I live, ye shall live also.’ ‘At that day’, when I am gone and I am communicated to your hearts by the Holy Spirit; ‘At that day ye shall know that I am in my Father.’ We shall be certain of it. He has succeeded and gone to glory. ‘And ye in me’ – assurance – ‘and I in you.’
