They should have known because he had spoken about eternity, about the hereafter, about Calvary and his death, so where I am going you know, and the way to where I am going you know. In other words, you know I am going to heaven, and you know I am going via Calvary. I have to suffer and to die. Well, that was the problem, they did not know. They could not take it in. They thought he was going to a place, not to his death. And this is to draw them out. ‘Whither I go ye know, and the way ye know.’ And Thomas falls for it.
