Well what is the solution? What hope is there? ‘Remember the word that I said unto you, The servant is not greater than his lord.’ This is a powerful argument. ‘If they have persecuted me’ – the Saviour who was perfect, sinless, so attractive as a person, so that to be with him, to hear him, to be in his presence was so compelling and wonderful – If they persecuted him, the God-man, well they are bound to find fault with us, poor feeble representatives, with our warts and all, and our problems of behaviour and character. How much more will they persecute us. ‘If they have kept my saying,’ which they did not of course, ‘they will keep yours also.’ The way the Saviour puts it is positive, but the negative is what is really meant. If they do not keep my saying, they certainly will not keep yours. Humanly you will never persuade them. Humanly you will never change them. ‘Then what are we going to do?’ the apostles might say. How are we going to fare? How are we going to manage?
