That is to say, they would certainly have had many sins but they would not have been guilty of the sin of rejection of Christ. But once he had come, they were guilty of the rejection of both the Son and of the Father, because Christ was in effect the Father personified. ‘For in him dwelleth all the fulness of the Godhead bodily.’ You looked at Christ and you heard Christ, and you saw the things he did, and you were getting a picture, an image, a representation of the Father and his character and his power. So if you hated Christ, you hated the Father also. ‘But now they have no cloke for their sin.’ The word in the Greek means something like this – they have no shining cover for their sin. They cannot look good anymore. Their sin is exposed.

Application

It is the same with us. We are supposed to be so distinct from the world, so distinctive as the people of God, loving the things of God, that we can be used even in the judgement of people – not only to win people, but in their judgement. Our distinctiveness as Christians and as the Christian church is supposed to be a reproof to the world. What are dear Christian people doing if they imitate the world? And they dress and behave and speak like the world, and put on the worldly concerts, and make the church as much like the world as possible. Then they cannot be used by God. They cannot be a reproof to the world. They are not distinctive. They are not different anymore. That is the reasoning of this passage. What is happening in much evangelicalism these days is not only disobedient to these principles, it is very foolish and counterproductive.
