‘They hated me without a cause.’ That phrase occurs several times in the Psalms, and the Lord uses it here. Because I have come, he says, and revealed God to them, in my words, in my behaviour, by my power, in my deeds. Because I have revealed the character of God to them, then it is proved that they have hated that. ‘They have hated me without a cause.’ I did not give them any cause to hate me. I did them no wrong. They have hated me simply because I represent the Father and I present to them perfection of character and compassion and power. They so hate my message that the cause is not in me but in them entirely.
