The Holy Spirit is not going to do it all without them. He is not going to do it instead of them, leaving them as spectators.
But what about the hostility? The Holy Spirit will melt hearts his way and convict souls. And the greatest periods of conversion, the greatest awakenings, revivals and reformations in the history of the church have always been when these things were ungarnished and seriously proclaimed. Not with jokes and informality and adaptation to whatever the latest worldly taste in entertainment was. Those have never been the times of blessing and they never will be yet.
Look at the way it is put – The Holy Spirit will do it, ‘and ye also shall bear witness.’ Absolutely the right way round. Sometimes we get it the wrong way round. I will preach, I will teach my Sunday school class, and the Holy Spirit will help me. Oh no, that is not how Christ taught it. The Holy Spirit will do it, and you will help him. That is the right way round. That keeps us with the right attitude, humbles us in our hearts and keeps us dependent upon him. He alone can open up the heart. He alone can overcome the hostility deep down within the human heart. He will convince, convict, remonstrate with, reason with, work and change people, and ye also shall bear witness.
