Judas was no longer present, so Christ could say of all of them, without the normal exception, ‘Ye are clean’. They were converted men, believing men, who had received eternal life, and though they would stumble, they would never lose their salvation. It is a wonderful thing just to go through the Gospel of John to look at the many salvation passages, like John 3.16. There are great salvation passages and promises of Christ of eternal life to those who believe in him all the way through this Gospel. So he is able to say, you are clean. You have been justified and accepted by God through those words. When you have heard it repeatedly, he says to the disciples, whosoever believeth in me, you have believed. They did not quite understand how he would secure salvation, but they fully believed that he would do it. And now they are about to find out how, and because they believed in him they were justified and accepted by God. ‘Now ye are clean through the word which I have spoken unto you.’
