He is almost saying, I am not like you, Annas; and you chief priests, high priests and Jewish leaders with your secret agendas and your secret meetings and your secret plots to murder and take out those who you suppose to be your enemies. Everything I do, I do openly. You don’t have to ask me about my teaching, you know it well enough; it’s reported to you day by day. Everything I say I utter in full public view. Of course, he did instruct his disciples privately along a practical level, but the message was always the same. And so this is the kind of answer that the Lord would give to somebody who was fishing in order to trap him. You don’t need to ask me that, he says; you have had it all reported to you. Of course, Christ knows that he knows, but he says to him, ‘Just about anybody in your court can tell you exactly what I teach and what I say – take it from them.’
