But one of them presses this challenge: ‘One of the servants of the high priest, being his kinsman,’ a brother of Malchus, ‘whose ear Peter cut off.’ He seems to recognise him. ‘Did not I see thee in the garden with him?’ ‘Peter then denied again,’ the third denial, ‘and immediately the cock crew.’ It is at that point that Luke says the Lord Jesus Christ was taken from Annas to Caiaphas across the corridor, and he looks and he sees Peter. And Peter sees the look of Christ, the disappointment on Christ’s face, disappointment in Peter for his denials, and Peter completely brakes down and weeps. He had denied the Lord. He had denied him once, twice, three times – the man of boldness and courage, the most forward of all the disciples. That great work needed to be performed in his heart which gave him the courage to even die for the Lord.
