He threw away his opportunity viewed humanly, and people do, don’t they. People can be desperately sick and they can be concerned about possibly dying and where they may go and what may happen, and do they have a soul, and yet they shrug it off. Somebody talks to them – in a weak moment they may listen, and then shrug it off. Just like Pilate in a sense. You witness to people: some, by the grace of God, will hear you. Others, as soon as they see which direction you are taking, brush you off and close it down. What an opportunity lost and forfeited! People get into deep water in life, and they are terribly depressed at some time, and they begin to think perhaps: What about God? Will he help me? Sweep the thought aside! It’s exactly what happens to Pilate. Are you asking me because this is the charge laid against me, says the Lord, or are you asking me for your own benefit? Am I really the King of the Jews? Do you want to know anything? Not me, says Pilate. This is of no interest or consequence to me, and he sweeps it aside. But the Lord continues to help him, if only he will receive it.
