Now his pride is wounded. ‘Won’t you speak to me?’ he says. In the Greek it is the other way round, ‘To me won’t you speak?’ You are not going to speak to me? I am the only one here who has the power either to crucify you or to release you, and you are not going to speak to me? That is Pilate, his wounded pride. He is appalled that Christ will not respond to him.
