They have eaten the passover already, but the passover feast is going on and the passover Sabbath has to be prepared for because of course this is Friday. So Pilate says to them, still hoping to produce some sympathy – ‘Behold your King!’ But that infuriates the Jewish leaders even more.Pilate presents Christ to the Jews again and says, ‘Behold your King!’ Is this your king? Are you still clinging to the charge that this man is the self-appointed leader who is going to rebel and take things over? And he points to the pathetic appearance of Christ after the scourging and the mock crowning.
