The final humiliation outwardly is that he was stripped entirely and his garments were seized by the soldiers. Now his mother was there, the soldiers did not necessarily know that but they might have guessed that there would be a sorrowing mother would come near in the final moment.
Theft is represented in the outward circumstances of Calvary because he was bearing away all the punishment due to us for our theft as well. Every one of us before conversion is a thief. We steal our lives, steal our powers, steal our moments and our days from God. We steal all our abilities, we steal everything – it is my life. We steal God’s air, we steal God’s food. We do not pay homage, we do not worship, we despise him, we slander him. No thanks to him: every one is a thief. Theft had to be atoned for by the inward sufferings of Christ when God the Father punished him instead of us for our sin.
