John 19:35

Because of the special significance of this, John affirms it to be true. ‘He that saw it bare record, and his record is true: and he knoweth that he said true, that ye might believe.’ And then it is added, ‘For these things were done, that the scripture should be fulfilled, A bone of him shall not be broken. And again another scripture saith, They shall look on him whom they pierced.’ Well there are two things going on here. Prophecies are fulfilled, but more: you must know about the blood and the water, says John. And because it is not recorded elsewhere I will affirm it. I was an eye witness and I put myself virtually under oath to affirm the truth of what I saw. Now, he doesn’t use language like that in connection with his having witnessed other fulfilments of prophecy in this very chapter but he says it about verse 34 because we have got to know it – blood and water, remission and regeneration from the side of Christ even after his death. And so his blood in a sense would flow and the water of the Spirit after his death until he comes again.
