But Pilate takes advantage of this. Somebody tells him – ‘Do you know what the soldiers have done, do you know what they are doing?’ ‘I can use that,’ said Pilate. ‘Pilate therefore went forth again, and saith unto them, Behold, I bring him forth to you, that ye may know that I find no fault in him.’ More strongly we could translate that, ‘I find no count or charge that can be levelled against him, no, not one.’ It is very emphatic. Have we not done enough? he is suggesting to the Jewish leaders. Is the scourging not enough for you? We have now humiliated him, you are so jealous of him, you wanted his whole work brought to an end, surely this will achieve that for you.
