These are very significant things. The old writers, the old preachers used to say, there had to be extra, massively excessive perfume for the burial of Christ because they knew this man was set for the rising of many. Christ was the Son of God, his influence would from now on be without end and world-wide and the perfume in their minds represented that. He was buried in a garden: the seed of life, the old writers like to say, buried in a garden. The human race fell in a garden, the seed of life, the Saviour, his work begins, after his death, in a garden. And a clean new tomb - everything about him must be clean. Think of the passover lamb in the book of Exodus, in the Pentateuch. In ancient times, you ate the passover lamb, you mustn’t break a single bone. Christ is our passover lamb, crucified for us and because he fulfils the types, the shadows, the passover lamb of the Old Testament, not a bone of him is broken. His side is pierced. The blood flows. And everything is conducted with cleansing, with great cleanliness, and the Lamb of God though butchered on Calvary is put in a clean, unused, mint tomb. And everybody from long ago would draw attention to these tremendous things.
