What you see there on Calvary’s cross outwardly – the humiliation of Christ – is vastly magnified in his inward sufferings. When God the Father put upon him all the guilt of those who were to be forgiven and saved and punished him instead of us, he had to feel all the humiliation that we deserve. Here we go through life, we reject God, we are so full of ourselves, we are proud, we are heady, we need no God. We can despise him, we can think Christ and the Gospel is foolishness. But one day at the end of life’s journey we die like that, unrepentant, we have to be stripped of everything and humiliated and go into eternity under the judgement of God, made to look so foolish, so pathetic, so absurd. What a Saviour to pay the price for us.
