It is an extraordinary question! What sign do you show? That was a sign, a tremendous sign, something they had never seen: one man with a little token whip and a powerful word driving all these resistant, reluctant tradesmen out of the temple court. What they are showing is their wilful blindness, their determination not to recognise any sign, not to grasp for a moment that one is among them who is at the very least a prophet from God, and who may be the Messiah.There is John the Baptist, he has had vast crowds attend his preaching, coming from everywhere. What has he been saying? It is their business to know. He has been saying that Messiah is here, that he is the forerunner. He has identified Jesus of Nazareth as the Lamb of God, who will take away, and is even now taking away, the sin of the world. But they do not believe it, and they will not listen, and they will not have it. And now their great resistance is shown. What is your authority for this? By what have you overridden the permits given by the priests in the temple to the tradespeople? By what authority do you claim to be the Son of God? We have heard you saying, ‘This is my Father’s house’; the Jewish people did not speak like that.
Application
So there is the power of Christ, and his power purges us at conversion. That is what conversion is. When we are brought to turn to Christ and rely upon him, and by a work of power he purges us. We become so conscious of our sinfulness and we repent of it. Even in the Christian life we regularly feel a great need to rededicate ourselves, a time of special consecration, and we are purged again as we are particularly conscious of our sinfulness and our need of forgiveness.
