John 2:23

This sounds tremendous! Many believed in his name, which means that they believed not merely he was a miracle worker, but that they believed that he was Messiah, the Christ. John is using elevated language: ‘This man is the man who we are expecting, he is the promised one’, they said. Throughout the Passover feast, there were people appealing to him and he was healing them. Witnessing these miracles had powerful effect on the people, but they did not look to him for the forgiveness of sin; they did not see him as the spiritual Messiah; they did not yield their lives to him, surrender themselves to him, or give themselves to him. ‘This must be a political Messiah’, they said, ‘who will deliver us from Roman authority and make us prosperous again. This is the man who will get us to heaven if we just believe in him.’ They simply recognised him, and so he did not commit himself to them.

Questions
Our translators for some reason have added the word ‘day’. They have put it in italics to warn you that it is not in the Greek, but it probably would be more helpful without it. ‘Now when he was in Jerusalem at the Passover, in the feast’, because what is going to be said no doubt occurred throughout the week, ‘many believed in his name, when they saw the miracles which he did.’
