These water pots were intended for the washing of hands and also, no doubt, for the washing of feet. They contained ‘two or three firkins apiece’, which the experts tell us is about twenty gallons apiece.‘Jesus saith unto them, Fill the waterpots with water’, and the servants probably thought, What is the good of that? It is wine we want, not water. I am being asked to do something, and it is heavy work, which seems to me to be completely illogical. But the words of Mary, said very gently, were still in their ears: Whatever he says, just do it. Whatever he says, comply and obey. Well, then let us do it. ‘And they filled them up to the brim.’ So there could be no question of tampering or some substances being added.
