In the reaction of the ruler of the feast we see the quality of the miracle. Who was he? He was probably some notable person. In old England it would have been the squire, the most important person around, who would be prevailed upon to honour the occasion and be the governor of the feast. So this was somebody reasonably special, the best they could muster in a poor area. He would have had reasonably good tastes and experience in life, and he was astonished at the quality of the wine. This was so exquisite. It was weak wine, but yes it was marvellous. He knew the region well: Wherever did you obtain this from? He had no idea, but the servants knew, and they were astonished. And the disciples saw it, or at least the first five or six – the five disciples who have already been named in the first chapter of John, and very likely James was one of them, though that is another discussion and argument – they saw it, and their faith was greatly strengthened. They were already convinced that he was the Messiah, but now they see this demonstration of his glory and his power. They saw the miracle, and they noted the governor’s reaction.
