Once the women had arrived at the sepulchre, Mary Magdalene evidently looked in and then left the others, feeling it fell to her to run and to tell the leading apostles that the tomb was empty. The other women left to tell the disciples just moments later. ‘Then she runneth and cometh to Simon Peter, and to the other disciple, whom Jesus loved,’ that is John’s way of describing himself. ‘And saith unto them, They have taken away the Lord out of the sepulchre, and we know not where they have laid him.’ Mary thinks that the officials, the Jewish officials have taken the body away. She thought those vindictive authorities had already raided the tomb because they didn’t want him to be there.
