These words of Christ mark the great transition. He will no longer be there – to do his miracles, to be present as God’s representative in the world.
Some people won’t have this. ‘Oh no, I must go to a healing meeting.’ Not that those healings are genuine. ‘I must go and I must see something. I must see incredible things. I must hear tongues which I convince myself are mysteriously and wonderfully from God. I must have physical tokens. No, says Christ, not any longer. By faith you believe the word and by that you prove the Lord. Don’t say, ‘Yes I believe that but I also must have…’ I remember many years ago somebody saying to me, ‘Yes, but if I couldn’t believe in miracles being performed before my eyes, where would I get my faith?’ That is a complete misunderstanding. Faith comes from simply believing the word of God and resting upon that.
