Then comes Simon Peter and with characteristic boldness proceeds right into the sepulchre, ‘and seeth the line clothes lie, and the napkin, that was about his head, not lying with the linen clothes, but wrapped together in a place by itself.’ Well, this is amazing. Just as Christ in his glorified body, that very day later on, passed through locked doors into the room where the disciples were assembled, so he is able to pass through the grave wrappings that were round his body, and there they are; they haven’t been unwound. They are just lying there. The body has moved right through them and out of them. He is raised and everything is so tidy in here. It is as if a guest has folded even the head handkerchief neatly and left. It looks leisurely. It looks unhurried. It looks as if someone has left his apartment in good order expecting visitors. It seems to be the act of someone who is totally in charge. This grave has not been robbed. There is no evidence of rough conduct or handling here.
