The dawn light is brightening, and there is probably a mist rising from the lake, from the sea. ‘Jesus stood on the shore,’ but he was an indistinct figure, they could not tell that it was the Saviour. They were some two or three hundred feet away from the shore. There was possibly a morning mist obscuring the view. They saw a figure; they did not know it was the Lord, or their eyes were withheld from recognising him. Maybe their sight was divinely withheld but equally the poor light may have made it hard to see clearly.
