Her response is respectful but earthly. ‘Thou has nothing to draw with, and the well is deep: from whence then hast thou that living water.’ She seemed to know you can dip your bucket into the water level and get your water, or if you are insistent on the freshest spring water, you can let it go right down and do the extra work and tap its source. ‘But you have not got anything, Sir, so where are you going to get at that moving, living spring water.’ It does not enter her mind for a moment that there is a spiritual sense involved. She just did not grasp anything spiritual, and so she chastises him very gently. She has got lots of words to say. It seems that she was a great conversationalist at all times.
Application
How many of us speak to people, and long to bring them to some knowledge of Christ, but we find the same thing. It is so hard to get people to cotton on to anything spiritual, anything true. It was the same for us. We too were so slow to understand spiritual things, whatever intelligence we might have had. It was so with this woman: she represents us all.
