Christ therefore responds more firmly. This is only water, material water. You drink and then you must drink again. You drink liquid umpteen times a day. How many times a week? How many times a month? You have never bothered to estimate it; it is pointless. How many times a year? How many times in a lifetime? Mere water needs to be taken again, and again, and again.
Application
Like all things of this world. You think if I can have this, I shall be satisfied with life. If I can only have this possession or that entertainment; if I could only get this or that pinnacle in life, or in the office, or this appointment; if I could only have this situation, everything would be so much better. You will drink again, and again, and again. Life is a long succession, stretching out in front of you, of replenishment, some other source of happiness, some other source of uplift, some other source of strength and encouragement. Constantly needed, of course it is. That is the difference between water and spiritual life.
