She still thinks he is talking about material water. She does not get it: the symbol of life, spiritual life, new life. So the time has come for the Lord to fire the first arrow of conviction. This is all about salvation from sin. She wants this water of life that he speaks of, but there is a barrier, and he must now point to her sin.
Application
In our witness we must get to conviction. You could be the greatest expert in apologetic arguments, but you know you have got to come to the point where you speak of salvation. It is a matter of forgiveness of sin. We do not know the lives of people like the Lord did. Our arrow cannot be quite like the arrow he fired, but we must tell people of faith in Christ, of needing him and trusting him for the forgiveness of sin and new life and heaven.
