She understood a little and had a dim conception that God would send Messiah – John adds the words, ‘which is called Christ’ – but she had not grasped who she was dealing with. However she now takes in what Christ says to her, that he is indeed the Messiah, for this is the message she takes away with her. Christ now reveals himself and this is co-incidental with the regenerating work of the Spirit. For this woman, though we are not told the details, it all came together at that moment. She understood his kindness, his wisdom, his patience, his glorious nature, his word. She understood it all. ‘He is the Messiah. That is why he knows all about me, and I need to repent, and I need to cry out for forgiveness.’ The disciples arrive, and she is so overwhelmed that she leaves her waterpot behind, and is immediately recruiting others. ‘Come, see a man’, and hear him, who told me all my life’s story and the terrible things I have done.’ They have never seen this woman in repentant mode, and they all flocked out to hear him, and there was that Samaritan revival. The Lord knew why he turned aside to that village of Samaria.
