John 4:28 Commentary and Bible Study

Now we read earlier on that the woman left her water pot, and she went back to her township, and she said to her people, ‘Come, see a man, which told me all things that ever I did.’ She disregards everything except the fact that she must tell others in the town about the one she has spoken to and so she leaves behind her waterpot, perhaps intending to return again later. However resistant she was during their conversation, she is now fully convinced and immediately shows the zeal of a new convert in wanting to tell others about Christ, and to see the same wonderful change in them that has taken place in herself.And they came. She was a lone witness, a very unlikely witness. She was newly saved, but Christ had revealed himself to her. We remember her reluctance, the difficulties she put in the way of salvation, the barriers she put up as Christ spoke to her. But now she has found him; she has realised who he is. She has realised her need of forgiveness, and she goes and summons the men of the town.Yes, but a feeble witness, a new believer in Christ. She will be inarticulate. She will not be good at explaining herself. She will be clumsy. And she is a woman. In the context of that culture, she cannot therefore be assertive. But it is brilliant the way she goes about her witness, and very natural. ‘Come, see a man, which told me all things that ever I did: is not this the Christ?’ She cannot say, I have found the Lord. Here is surely Christ. She has got to put it in a very non-assertive, suggestive way, because she is only a woman in that man-ruling society of those days.
