Christ teaches in this initially enigmatic way. Of course, he is referring to meat, not literally but metaphorically: the satisfaction of doing divine work. They have not yet grasped this. ‘I have meat to eat that ye know not of.’ That witness to that woman, who would go out, go back to her town and bring others also, and there would be a great crowd of men and women of Samaria saved, converted, brought to recognise the Messiah.
Application
It is important to eat, but it is just as important for the believer to be invigorated by doing the Lord’s work. Sadly, many do very little for the Lord, but this is our real work in this life. If we are called to any task, it must be what provides real joy and delight. If God’s work is a chore or we surround it with grumbles, we are not looking at it in the right way. We must pray for and look for service for the Lord and do it for him. How much more would be accomplished and how many more would be spoken to if we rejoiced to witness to him as we should.
