John reports that ‘the Galilaeans received him’, which seems to contradict what was said in the previous verse. But they did not receive him as Messiah; they received him as a miracle worker. ‘We will have the healings, we will have the signs and wonders’, they said, but they did not recognise him as Messiah, not yet.‘The Galilaeans received him, having seen all the things that he did at Jerusalem at the feast’, because of course, they very many of them had also been at Jerusalem, at the feast. There he had done many miracles. He had only done one in Galilee, and that was the turning the water into wine at Cana.
