He does not say, ‘Your son will live’, but, ‘your son is better; your son is healed already.’ What a challenge. ‘He is not coming with me’, thinks the nobleman. ‘I believe him. He has healed my boy, and I am going to obey his command and go home. I am going to trust him’, and he went home. His servants were confused, I expect. ‘But sir, he is not coming. We have not persuaded him to come.’ ‘I believe him,’ he says. ‘He has healed my son. He has commanded me to go home. He is Messiah. I trust him. I heard it in his voice.’Christ forces the nobleman to exercise faith, not on the basis of an observed miracle, but solely on the basis of his bare word to the nobleman. He must leave without the Lord and trust that he will find his son living when he gets home. He must exercise greater faith than he expected when he came looking for Jesus.It must have been a hard journey home, reflecting on what he was going to find there. He thinks, ‘Will a voice suddenly come to me with bad news? Will my wife come running out of the house and say, “He is dead, he is gone, and you have not brought the healer”?’ How will he face that? ‘No,’ he says, ‘I am not thinking along those lines. I believe him, I trust him, I rest myself on what he has said to me.’
Application
And that is how it has to be for us when we come to Christ for salvation. I must not say, ‘Lord, forgive me and change me, and do it in such a dramatic manner that I do not have to doubt.’ Instead I must believe him and trust him and sincerely yield my heart to him. I have pleaded for forgiveness; I have trusted in what he has done on Calvary to purchase salvation for me and to bear my punishment, and now I am going to believe him and obey him. I am going to read my Bible, and I am going to pray every day, and I am going to live by his power, because I am trusting him.
