There was never a more reluctant hearer than the woman of Samaria that came to the well when Christ was there. ‘There cometh a woman of Samaria’ – not all the way from Samaria, the city, but a woman of the region of Samaria. How far she had come, from a settlement or village, we do not know. Half a mile maybe.‘There cometh a woman of Samaria to draw water: ‘Jesus saith unto her,’ – no doubt very politely, very kindly –‘Give me to drink.’ She comes to that well, and there is the Saviour of the world, and she does not know it. There is the one who can save her soul, put her on the road to heaven, bless her in life, give her happiness and spiritual riches, and she has no idea, and she is going to prove very difficult. There are many different ways at looking at this interaction between Christ and her. Some of them are much too optimistic about the woman. They try to construct a picture of a woman in the course of salvation even as the discussion goes on. But no, she is very resistant, right to the very end.
